Hemp “hurds” are the woody inner core of the Industrial Hemp plant, also called “shives” after the outer skin (fiber) is removed. This hurd looks like wood chips but is much lighter and more absorbent, making them a great insulator for animal bedding, mulching, and “Hempcrete” construction projects.

Benefits of Hemp Bedding:

Very Absorbent – Hemp absorbs 4x its own weight, at the rate of ~7mg per minute. You’ll spend less time and money cleaning up after your pets.

Low Dust – Hemp produces significantly fewer dust particles than wood shavings, straw or hay and helps keep mold and mildew at bay longer than other bedding materials.

Reduces Odor – Hemp has lots of tiny pores that let out air while trapping odors within, providing airflow on top of the bedding and trapping unpleasant smells underneath. This also keeps the hemp bedding dryer for longer.

Biodegradable – sustainable, renewable and green. Hemp takes only 3 months to grow compared to wood and uses less water that most commercially farmed fiber products like straw or hay.

Sustainable – Hemp produces four times as much pulp as trees per acre and can be renewed annually. It has the highest yield per acre of any other fiber crop, especially when used in rotation with other crops, without the need for herbicides or pesticides.
